Red hot CHILE !

Red hot CHILE !

Jul 24, 2014

So I went to Chile ,did some stuff ,drunk some pisco, climbed roof tops and went down some waterfalls… hmmmmmmmm now doesn’t that sound lekker.

I met up with  my friends from Europe in Santiago and we started making our way down south to the whitewater headquarters which is Pucon. On the way there we stopped and got wet on a Chilean classic the rio Claro ,the levels where super low so we did not do the full section which was a real downer but we still had fun , after the run we decided to do the section again but with out the boats “a nappy run” some good fun!

Arriving in Pucon we met up with local kayaker Sebstian Storable, he gave us some tips on what rivers he thought were must run classics. We made camp just outside Pucon on the banks of Rio Palguin next to the 30m monster ,Salto Palguin. The weather was really bad for the first 3 weeks or so but  it brought with rain and as you know rain is good for kayaking. We stayed in the Pucon area for a month hitting up all the classics. Running a 28m waterfall called middle Palguin was definitely the highlight for me in Pucon.

Pucon is a really great little town not just for kayaking but any outdoors enthusiests , however it can become a bit of a shipon meaning its easy to get stuck there. We decided that it was time to say goodbye to Pucon and headed south. On our way south we we kept ticking off the rivers we had on our must run list .Some of the highlights for me were the famous Salto Nilahue(A beautiful  24m waterfall I am super stocked to tick this one off my list), the rio Gol-Gol is for me personally the best waterfall run in Chile and is quite full on.

Upon arrival in Hornopiren we found out that the ferry which takes you further south was only  leaving in 4 days time. We got ourselves a really cool camp spot at the take out of the rio Negro, we then spent the 4 days doing laps on this super fun river as well as the rio Blanco.

Sadly my time had come to an end I only had a couple of days left in Chile ,I decided I would travel back up to Pocun and spend my last days paddling in and around Pucon. As for the rest of the team, they went future south to the rio Futa and rio Baker .I was really sad that I didn’t have enough time to make it to these two rivers,I’ll just have to go back. Chile is an amazing place for whitewater kayaking if you haven’t been there then make plan, I promise you wont be disappointed.
